The idea of sound proofing

While solving a noise issue, you have to set a few things:

1. Is the noise coming from within the space or is it coming from any adjacent space?

2. How loud is the dba sound?

3. How loud do you want it to be? Remember that most office and home spaces are around 35 or 45 dba to start with. Complete silence is not a goal.

If your noise source is from the music practice rooms and you want to keep it there, you have to enhance the transmission loss of the materials that make up the partitions between the rooms. Products that enhance the TL of are rated with an STC. Be very mindful while looking for soundproofing products that don’t give you an STC rating if you want them for enhancing your transmission loss.

Some products will be rated according to the city noise ordinance or an NRC rating. The NRC rating is something completely different and is part of the most commonly misunderstood acoustics functionalities. Sound proof foams are also generally a misrepresentation. To enhance the TL of the partition, you have to enhance its mass. Closed cell spray and foam on material don’t do this. That doesn’t mean they don’t have their place in acoustics. They just don’t work for this issue. Look for products that comes with an STC rating of 26 or higher.

Another thing to keep in mind while purchasing s4 sound materials online is that you’re dealing with a company that can be anywhere. Make sure that their website shows you who they are, where they are, and how to contact them through other mediums other than email. You should be able to call and speak to someone if you have queries. Soundproofing isn’t inexpensive. Don’t be scared to get assistance.
